These transparent energy-generating windows rely on small-molecule organic photovoltaic technology to convert unwanted infrared and ultraviolet light into renewable power. NEXT windows provide the same functionality and high-performance as low-e windows, but with the added benefit of renewable energy production for over 30 years. They are estimated to produce 20% to 30% of the power of conventional opaque photovoltaics, but they can be placed on the exterior façade instead of the rooftop.
Twenty-two NEXT windows were recently installed on the south façade of one of clothing manufacturer Patagonia’s corporate HQ buildings in Ventura, CA. Cables from the windows will deliver power to a battery bank as a renewable way for employees to charge their devices.
